@WEL @SOU - Car Crime - Please don't leave your valuables on display

Hello,

Unfortunately we have had another vehicle broken into (a grey VW Golf) and a handbag stolen from it which had been left on the back seat at the BURTON DASSETT country park.
This occurred yesterday (Thursday) between 1515hrs & 1540hrs.

This has caused distress and inconvenience to the victim who was visiting the area and has had to cancel their bank cards and change the locks on their property as their house keys were also stolen.
A similar offence also occurred in Fenny Compton on the Southam patch on Wednesday

We are patrolling the area as much as our resources allow but please don't leave valuables on display when leaving your vehicles.

Thanks and kind regards,

@WEL - Rural watch update 12/05/2014 - Warmington

Hello,

Approximately 8 allotments in Mollington lane WARMINGTON have been targeted by thieves who have stolen items such as strimmers and garden tools etc.
The team will be attending today to assess the scene and offer crime prevention advice such as fitting shed alarms and alarmed padlocks which are fairly inexpensive but very effective as proved at other locations where this has been an issue in the past.

Hello,

Just off our Snt area ( covered by our Shipston colleauges ) but relevant due to it's close proximity to Wellesbourne.

A large outbuilding on a farm  situated on Stratford road LOXLEY has been broken into overnight between Friday 2nd & Saturday 3rd May 2014.
A large quantity of tools including chainsaws have been stolen by offender/s who forced the side door of the building and it is believed they then made their escape by driving across fields to the main road. ( incident number 57 of 03/05/14 refers )

Please be wary of any persons or vehicles seen acting suspiciously near rural premises or farms whatever the time of day and try ( without putting yourself at risk ) to obtain any registration numbers or descriptions then immediately dial us on 101 or obviously 999 if a crime is taking place or should you feel that an immediate response is required.

@WEL - Recent incident in Wellesbourne

Yesterday my elderly parents came back from shopping and noticed a short man wearing a woolly hat and Wellington boots knocking on doors on the Dovehouse estate. He eventually knocked on their door and offered to power wash the front drive for only £5 per metre. He told them he would show them what he could do so then the garage was opened so he could access the water supply.

He proceeded to clean the whole drive without permission and demanded £350 in payment. He was offered a cheque but refused abruptly and said that he would take my mother to the hole in the wall. They refused to pay £350 so he told them he would let them have it for £300.

They paid him just to get rid of him as they were frightened of what he could do. They rummaged around the house for £300 cash.

Just wanted to make everyone aware of this scam, do not let him show you what he does.

Police have been informed.

@WAR - Door to door collections, South Warwickshire

Door to door collectors for the charity Oxfam are active in Harbury and this much has been confirmed  by Oxfam ( telephone 0300 200 1300) to me. Furthermore it is their intention to canvass post code areas CV1 through to CV47 over the next few days/weeks.
It is likely that these collectors are agency staff working on a commission basis.  They can be very persistent and are expert at overcoming objections. It is not a good idea, in any circumstances, to give details of your bank account and/or a specimen of your signature to a stranger.

If they will not take ‘no’ for an answer, if they become aggressive and/or if you feel threatened, you should call the police on 101.

@WAR - Message for Teachers and Parents in South Warwickshire

SW SA Message for Teachers and Parents - vehicle crime around Southam and Stockton & Napton Schools

For the attention of all teachers and parents.
Please be aware that we have seen and increase in cars been broken into whilst they are left unattended by parents collecting their children from schools in the Napton and Southam areas of South Warwickshire. The targets for the thieves have been purses and handbags left on display either in the passenger foot-well or on the passenger seat. The method of entry has been to smash the passenger window.

Warwickshire police Crime Prevention Design Advisor Ian King states “ It is important that you always remove your valuables from your car even if you are only leaving it for a very short period, especially if the vehicle is going to be out of your sight. If you must leave items in the car put them out sight by locking them in the boot. I would also ask that you be aware of any suspicious activity in the area where cars are parked. If you see anything suspicious report if both to the school and to the police on telephone number 101”

Teachers - Please could you include this information in any School Newsletters?

NHW Recipients - Please could you pass on to anyone you know who has children attending schools in Southam and the surrounding area.

Many thanks
Julie

@WAR - Shed & garage burglaries across south Warwickshire

NHW SA Advice for protecting sheds and tools following shed & garage burglaries across south Warwickshire

Please be aware that there has been a spate of shed burglaries, garage burglaries and thefts from gardens, across the county, over the last couple of weeks.  The latest incidents in south Warwickshire have occurred at homes in Wootton Wawen, Welford on Avon, Henley in Arden and Stratford.

Attached is a leaflet containing basic crime prevention advice, on how best to protect your shed, bicycles, tools and equipment.

Please be alert and actively on the lookout for suspicious person or activity around your own or neighbouring homes and please report anything of concern, to Police, on 101.

Finally, the best deterrent to thieves is mark your property.  This can be done very inexpensively and in several different ways.  The cheapest way is to write your postcode on tools and equipment with a permanent marker pen which is a very visible deterrent as thieves cannot sell your items on without question, and do not want to be caught with marked items.

Another effective way is to mark your items with Smartwater, available through Neighbourhood Watch or from Stratford Police Station for £15.00 per kit.  Each kit marks around 50 items with a clear DNA like solution which you register to your address.  This is not a visible deterrent but signage applied to items and sheds does put off thieves who know that if they are caught with stolen items, the items can be traced back to their owners.

A newer product is a Cremark kit costing around £12.00.  This has been developed by 2 ex Police Officers from Lincolnshire and is a kit containing an indelible pen for visually mark items and then a spray on solution which is virtually impossible to get off, to cover the pen markings.

There are, of course, other effective products on the market at very reasonable prices.

Thankyou
Julie Dale

@NAT - May is Scams Awareness Month!

According to the Trading Standards Institute, only five per cent of scams are reported.  This is because so many people feel shame or embarrassment at being caught out.  We don't want people to suffer in silence.  We want you to help us encourage your neighbours, relatives and friends to report scams or attempted scams to www.actionfraud.police.uk or 0300 123 2040.

You can download useful anti-scam resources from www.thinkjessica.com, a charity protecting elderly and vulnerable people from scams.  For a small charge of £2 to cover postage and packing you can also order hard copies of A4/A5 posters from them - contact advice@thinkjessica.com for more information.

This week the campaign is focusing on online scams.  For information about staying safe online, we recommend you visit www.getsafeonline.org or www.cyberstreetwise.com.  Both of those sites have lots of useful information.
