WAS - Courier Fraudsters are active again in South Warwickshire

NHW SA WK Beware - Courier Fraudsters are active again in South Warwickshire - Don't be their next victim

This message is sent on behalf of Inspector Goddard of South Warwickshire Police:

Beware
Over the past two days Warwickshire Police have received a number of reports relating to courier fraud. This involves elderly people being targeted by fraudsters who make telephone contact purporting to be a police officer from the Metropolitan Police.

They will ask people to call them back to confirm their identity but this will simply put the victim straight back through to the fraudster. Fake couriers will be sent to the victim's address to collect cash and cards.

Police advice is to terminate the call immediately and contact 101 to report the matter. Please look out for your elderly neighbours and family members to assist us in preventing further people falling victim to this type of distressing offence.

Attached is a POSTER which can be forwarded on to friends and neighbours, or displayed in shops, pubs or prominent community places.

Thank you
Julie Dale

20/05/2016 Be aware door to door jet washing – Alcester

By Simon Cripwell on May 20, 2016 02:32 pm
Warwickshire Trading Standards are advising householders in the Alcester area to be aware of people operating door to door offering to jet wash driveways.
Reports suggest they are charging hundred of pounds (more than the cost of buying some jet washers) and falsely claiming to 'seal' the driveway with a solution afterwards. One resident is also reported to have been left with a blocked drain.
Warwickshire Trading Standards advises residents not to buy at the doorstep and if in doubt, keep their door closed.
Trading Standards Officers will be visiting the area to advise local residents today (Friday 20th May).

17/05/2016 Bogus council callers

By Simon Cripwell on May 17, 2016 12:03 pm
Warwickshire residents are warned to beware of fraudulent phone calls from people falsely claiming to be working for Warwickshire County Council. The bogus callers ask residents if they have recently been involved in an accident. Some callers may even claim to be working in the entirely fictitious 'council accident department'.
The real purpose of the scam phone calls is to find people who have had car accidents where they were not at fault. The callers then sell/pass these details on to 'no win no fee' law firms who will seek to represent the individual and claim damages from the other party, taking a 30%+ cut of any compensation gained!

Scam Telephone Calls
Warwickshire Police are urging people to be vigilant following a series of scam phone calls made to Warwickshire residents.
Several people from the Stratford area and rural villages have reported being called this week Tuesday 10th May to Friday 13th May 2016. On each occasion the scammers purported to be from the police in London, that they were the fraud squad and had arrested a male in an Apple store with stolen credit cards.
Scammers typically target elderly people, and have on a couple of occasions have asked the victims to withdraw money from the bank and hand it over to a courier who had been sent to their address.
Fortunately the majority of the victims have realised this is a scam and have not given of their bank details nor withdrawn money.
Police are issuing the following advice:
Do not give out any personal details over the phone.
The banks and police will never ask you for your PIN or for money
If you receive a call like this, please hang up immediately and call 101 from a different phone. If there is a crime in progress, please call 999.
Please share this message with any elderly friends and relatives.
